MILL RACE FOLK TONIGHT – CANCELLED!

We are really sorry to say that we have had to cancel tonight’s concert due to the bad weather. Ewan was really gutted and we left it until this morning to make a decision as we hoped the thaw would happen a little sooner. Unfortunately the snow is particularly bad in Bristol and Ewan wouldn’t be able to make it to us in time.

We will be refunding all tickets bought through eventbrite for this event, and we hope to reschedule a gig for Ewan as soon as possible. If you have any questions please let us know.

Apologies. We are really gutted.

Stay informed by signing up to our newsletter. Ewan and everyone at Mill Race Folk are gutted that tonight has been cancelled but we look forward to seeing you all soon x

Ewan McLennan at Mill Race Folk

Ewan-2018-A4-poster

The next Mill Race Folk is with Ewan McLennan.

Ewan’s music has depth of feeling & sincerity. Whether singing haunting traditional Scottish ballads or weaving the powerful stories that make up his own songs, Ewan’s unique, moving and earthy voice is always compelling. His guitar playing is outstanding and forms an essential part of his music. Ewan’s most recent project, entitled Breaking the Spell of Loneliness, was a collaborative tour and album with renowned author and journalist George Monbiot, seeking to use music and word to open up the issue of loneliness and community.

This will be Ewan’s second visit to the Mill. Food and drink will be available from the cafe on the night, provided by the Star Food Co.

When?: Saturday 3rd March 2018

Where?: Bromham Mill, Bedford, Beds

Mill Race Folk has returned to Bromham Mill! Marisa Jack and Davy are ready to go with another excellent selection of contemporary folk and traditional music in the beautiful, intimate setting of Bedford’s 18th century water mill. The the cafe once again providing delicious food and drink.

To start our new season, The Askew Sisters will be performing!
“From dark ballads to uplifting dance tunes, they play with driving energy and the unity of two people who have played together all their lives.

The sisters use fiddle, melodeon and concertina to breathtaking effect, creating cinematic arrangements that get to the very heart of each song. These create a perfect setting for Hazel’s striking voice, which won her Best Female Singer at the Spiral Earth Awards 2011.

Emily and Hazel’s latest album, In the Air or the Earth, was released by RootBeat Records, to widespread critical acclaim, including the Spiral Earth Award for Best Traditional Album 2015.”

Tickets are only £10 and are available from eventbrite or pop into the Mill at the weekend and buy a ticket from Rachel at the cafe x

John Kirkpatrick at Mill Race Folk

KIRKPATRICK-The Place-sm

This is a big one for Mill Race Folk. We are really excited!

John Kirkpatrick is one of the most prolific figures on the English folk scene, and has established an enviable reputation as an instrumental virtuoso (melodeon, Anglo concertina and button accordion), as well as a leading interpreter of English folk music. During his long career he has played with Martin Carthy, Shirley Collins, Richard Thompson and Steeleye Span to name but a few. Support on the night comes from us lot, local trio Marisa Jack & Davy.

Tickets are only £12 and are available at The Place Theatre

Mill Race Folk Social Photos

On Saturday 3rd June we had our first Mill Race Folk Social at Basement at Bunyan in Bedford. We had a huge variety of floor spot performers with guitar, flute, melodeon, jig dolls, a morris monkey stick (a pole with metal “jingles” with a  boot attached to the base), dulcimer stick and bouzouki. Everyone who performed was brilliant. Some had been playing for years, for others it was their first time on their own in front of a crowd. The audience belted out the choruses and we only broke one wine glass. A special thank you to Bity Booker who traveled from London to perform a special extended floor spot for us. She was magical!

Our performers were Edward Major, Gillie Sharp, Christian Webb, Nicky Clements, Matthew Rickard. Julie MacLaren, Bity Booker, Roy Hollowell & Maggie Plowman, Sam Wilson, Simon Munnery and MarisaJack&Davy from Mill Race Folk.

We had a raffle for local Bedford charity,  JustUs and raised almost £70 for them. Thanks to everyone who bought a ticket.

Thanks also to Anna Rickard and Tracey Wright who took some pictures for us. We were so busy we forgot to document the evening! We are looking for more, so if you were at the night and you have a photo buried away on your phone we’d love to see them.

Jack’s parents, Peter and Gillie, we’re invaluable at helping us man our DIY bar (sorry we ran out of white wine, we will definitely buy more next time!) and for keeping an eye on the door. We are really thankful for all their help on the night.

We plan to do another social in the Autumn with another special guest. If you would like to be involved, please contact us. See you soon x
