Here are some photos of some of our floor spot performers from our last Mill Race Folk social at Basement at Bunyan from June 2017
On Saturday 3rd June we had our first Mill Race Folk Social at Basement at Bunyan in Bedford. We had a huge variety of floor spot performers with guitar, flute, melodeon, jig dolls, a morris monkey stick (a pole with metal “jingles” with a boot attached to the base), dulcimer stick and bouzouki. Everyone who performed was brilliant. Some had been playing for years, for others it was their first time on their own in front of a crowd. The audience belted out the choruses and we only broke one wine glass. A special thank you to Bity Booker who traveled from London to perform a special extended floor spot for us. She was magical!
Our performers were Edward Major, Gillie Sharp, Christian Webb, Nicky Clements, Matthew Rickard. Julie MacLaren, Bity Booker, Roy Hollowell & Maggie Plowman, Sam Wilson, Simon Munnery and MarisaJack&Davy from Mill Race Folk.
We had a raffle for local Bedford charity, JustUs and raised almost £70 for them. Thanks to everyone who bought a ticket.
Thanks also to Anna Rickard and Tracey Wright who took some pictures for us. We were so busy we forgot to document the evening! We are looking for more, so if you were at the night and you have a photo buried away on your phone we’d love to see them.
Jack’s parents, Peter and Gillie, we’re invaluable at helping us man our DIY bar (sorry we ran out of white wine, we will definitely buy more next time!) and for keeping an eye on the door. We are really thankful for all their help on the night.
We plan to do another social in the Autumn with another special guest. If you would like to be involved, please contact us. See you soon x
This newly re-furbished basement has beautifully rendered brickwork, newly glazed windows and big doorways that opens up into the ‘Castle Quarter’. This area of Bedford is an important part of the town with with historic associations, museums, art galleries, specialist bookshops and riverside restaurants.
The Basement at Bunyan is linked to the John Bunyan Museum and has two craft-rooms, a flexible exhibition and meeting space, a quiet room and refreshment area. The council have approved our temporary events licence, so we’ll be able to sell you some bottled beers or a glass of wine too!
The first MILL RACE FOLK SOCIAL event is at Basement at Bunyan! A new night in a new venue in Bedford town. It’s a gorgeous place that’s just been renovated. Do you know any folk songs? Floor spots are open to performers so contact us if you’d like to play.
