Thanks so much to Thom who played at Mill Race Folk last night with Jack and yep, it was amazing! We had free quiche too (Thanks to Rachel at Number 13!). Moot Hall is a lovely old building with great acoustics and atmosphere- It is perfect for folk music. We’re so lucky to be using this space as a venue.
We recorded a podcast with Thom too, look out for this new episode in a few weeks time.
On Saturday 31st March, Stick in the Wheel did a show at Bedford Esquires. It was a fierce performance to arapacious Mill Race Folk crowd. Stick don’t do genteel folk music and Esquires is your typical black box rock venue that the locals have a lot of affection for. In-between songs, a curious deafening noise by a band from the bar on the ground floor caused some interruption, but Stick handled it well with their usual acid wit.
Below are some photos of the gig by Christian Webb
Thanks so much to everyone who came to see the show. The next Mill Race Folk event is at Moot Hall with the amazing Anna and Elizabeth on Saturday 5th May. We’ve only a few tickets left over at eventbrite. After that we have our first ever Folk On A Boat with Bryony Griffiths and Will Hampson. See you there! x
HEY! Mill Race Folk Xmas Social is on Saturday 9th December. Come! Sing! Play! We wanna hear your folk songs- We have floor spots available. A night of festive, friendly folk with lovely people, it would be great to see you. There will be beer and wine for sale, tea and coffee, mince pies and a charity raffle. Message us for more details. Also we have special guest performer Men Diamler.
He has toured the UK extensively, sharing the stage with the likes of BILLY CHILDISH, TONY ALLEN, LUKE HAINES AND ALASDAIR ROBERTS, and recorded sessions for Marc Riley’s 6 Music Show, Radio X and Resonance FM.
In 2017 Men Diamler appeared on the STICK IN THE WHEEL curated compilation “From Here : English Folk Field Recordings” and has began work on recording his first ‘band’ record.
Mill Race Folk Christmas Social is at Basement at Bunyan, Bunyan Meeting Church, Mill Street, Bedford, MK40 3EU on Saturday 9th December. Doors at 7:30pm.
Here are some photos of some of our floor spot performers from our last Mill Race Folk social at Basement at Bunyan from June 2017
Thanks to Kristian Purcell for taking some lovely action shots of John Kirkpatrick at Mill Race Folk. We had an unforgettable evening of music at The Place Theatre, Bedford. John was in very fine form and he charmed the whole audience with his singing, charisma and some dexterous concertina hi-jinks.
On Saturday 3rd June we had our first Mill Race Folk Social at Basement at Bunyan in Bedford. We had a huge variety of floor spot performers with guitar, flute, melodeon, jig dolls, a morris monkey stick (a pole with metal “jingles” with a boot attached to the base), dulcimer stick and bouzouki. Everyone who performed was brilliant. Some had been playing for years, for others it was their first time on their own in front of a crowd. The audience belted out the choruses and we only broke one wine glass. A special thank you to Bity Booker who traveled from London to perform a special extended floor spot for us. She was magical!
Our performers were Edward Major, Gillie Sharp, Christian Webb, Nicky Clements, Matthew Rickard. Julie MacLaren, Bity Booker, Roy Hollowell & Maggie Plowman, Sam Wilson, Simon Munnery and MarisaJack&Davy from Mill Race Folk.
We had a raffle for local Bedford charity, JustUs and raised almost £70 for them. Thanks to everyone who bought a ticket.
Thanks also to Anna Rickard and Tracey Wright who took some pictures for us. We were so busy we forgot to document the evening! We are looking for more, so if you were at the night and you have a photo buried away on your phone we’d love to see them.
Jack’s parents, Peter and Gillie, we’re invaluable at helping us man our DIY bar (sorry we ran out of white wine, we will definitely buy more next time!) and for keeping an eye on the door. We are really thankful for all their help on the night.
We plan to do another social in the Autumn with another special guest. If you would like to be involved, please contact us. See you soon x
Thanks so much to photographer, Christian Webb for taking photos of the us and of Daoirí Farrell at The Place Theatre on Tuesday. What a night! Daoirí was brilliant and we’re so chuffed for him. He won two awards at the Radio 2 Folk Awards 2017 the following evening. What a star and a really lovely man. Hope to see him perform again soon. x
A few months back Nic & Ian from Stick in the Wheel journeyed over to our little terrace house in Bedford to record Jack singing and playing in our kitchen. They’ve been going around the country doing folk field recordings: Capturing the folk performer raw at home in just a take or two with no studio frills or pesky overdubs! The result is From Here: English Folk Field Recordings – a set of immediate and intimate recordings by contemporary folk singers doing traditional songs that mean something to them, due to be released on 17th March 2017. It features folk establishment figures like Jon Boden, Lisa Knapp, Martin and Eliza Carthy, and one of our very own- Mr Jack Sharp singing Bedfordshire May Carol (track 1!). Well done guys on a fabulous album. We love it x
“That was a religious song. We’re not particularly religious but it’s got some imagery about zombies”
On December 18th 2016 we supported the amazing Stick in the Wheel at the Union Chapel Bar. We had a great time, we always have fun when we visit London. There was a lovely blogger in the audience who took some very professional photos of us and Stick in the Wheel. They wrote a sweet little review of our set too (our first ever review!). You can read more about it and admire the excellent pictures at Redrospective.
